On Wednesday, Jan 16, 2013, at 7:00 pm Transition Ferndale will be showing the video, “Coal Country,” at the Ferndale Library, 222 E. Nine Mile Road, Ferndale, Mi. This is a 2009 documentary about coal mining in West Virginia.
While production and sales of coal have recently declined in this country, partly because more natural gas is used for generating electricity, plenty of coal-powered plants remain. You can see some of them just by driving up M-29 from Algonac to Port Huron, where the St. Clair River makes it easy to deliver coal by barge.
Mountaintop removal may not seem like a local problem. It is certainly not the same acute problem for us that it is for someone living in West Virginia. Since some of our electricity is coming from coal mined by that process, then it mountaintop removal is our problem, too.
We are sorry for the announcement of this meeting being sent out so late. We were trying to get a speaker for this Wednesday, but the schedule just did not work out.
This meeting is free and open to the public. You do not need to be a resident of Ferndale.
